Dana White has laughed off the possibility of Canelo Alvarez fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov or Jorge Masvidal in the near future.
It emerged last week that boxing’s biggest star has filed a lawsuit against his broadcaster DAZN, as well as his promoter Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions.
Canelo’s future is now unclear
Canelo put pen to paper on a $365million eleven-fight deal touted as the richest in the history of sport when he signed it less than two years ago.
The agreement called for a $15m tune-up bout against Rocky Fielding in December 2018, followed by ten fights for a guaranteed $35m each.
However, after just two further bouts against Daniel Jacobs and Sergey Kovalev, problems have started to arise.
It’s claimed DAZN attempted to drastically cut the guarantee ahead of Canelo’s next fight as – among other issues – they were not happy with the level of opposition faced so far.
It’s claimed Khabib would be considered
Dan Rafael reported that one of the central issues to the lawsuit was that the Mexican is “supposed to fight two times per year with at least one fight being against a ‘premium’ opponent.”
He explained that there is a serious dispute over what constitutes a ‘premium’ foe and said DAZN didn’t consider Jacobs or Kovalev fitting.
According to Rafael, DAZN would consider Gennady Golovkin, Jorge Masvidal, Khabib Nurmagomedov and even 47-year-old De La Hoya as ‘premium’ opponents.
Jorge Masvidal and Gennady Golovkin happened to bump into one another in the UFC offices in Las Vegas last week
Upon hearing this report in relation to his two fighters Khabib and Masvidal, UFC president White was bemused.
“That’s f***ing hilarious,” he said at his press conference.
“I don’t even know what to say to that, that’s hilarious.
“But, are you shocked? That’s the state of boxing, it’s really where those guys are at.
“I don’t even know what to say to that.”
