Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez wants to fight in the UK, according to his promoter, Eric Gomez.
The four division world champion and current WBA middleweight king is set to return to a boxing ring for the first time this year and take on an as of yet unnamed opponent on September 12 in the US.
Canelo is one of boxing’s very best
Canelo, whose only professional boxing loss came at the hands of the undefeated Floyd Mayweather in 2013, is keen to reach more fans and clashes with Britain’s Billy Joe Saunders and Callum Smith have been mooted.
Golden Boy Promotions president Gomez told Boxing Social: “We’ve talked about it, and he obviously wants to expand his brand and his likeness, and I think that would be sensational if we could get something done in the UK.
“But we have talked about it. We’ve talked about going to Japan as well, and I think he wants to start to travel and fight outside the US.
“I think it’s going to create a bigger market for himself.”
Canelo was heavily rumoured to fight Saunders before the coronavirus pandemic put a halt to the world of sport in March.
Saunders was expected to face Canelo this year
Smith has been another Brit rumoured to take on Canelo
And Gomez is hopeful the highly-anticipated bout will happen in the future.
He added: “We’re all for it. We never had a finalised deal.
“We were discussing the possibility of going with that fight, and then the pandemic hit, and we had to stop everything.
“Everything came to a screeching halt. It’s unfortunate, but maybe it can happen in the future. We don’t know.
“I know Billy Joe has essentially said that he’s not going to fight for the rest of the year. Maybe I’m mistaken. I don’t know for sure.
Eddie Hearn thinks it's sad that Mike Tyson is making boxing comeback
“But if the fight can be made in the future, I think it would a terrific fight. Any or all of them.
“They’re all world class fighters, and that’s the kind of fighter that Canelo wants to fight.”
Matchroom Boxing chief Eddie Hearn, though, believes the Mexican fighter wants a crack at Smith, but the September 12 date may be tricky considering Mike Tyson’s exhibition bout is scheduled for then.

“I think that Canelo likes the Callum Smith fight because he’s the super champion and he’s also the Ring Magazine champion, he is on paper the number one super middleweight in the division,” Hearn told talkSPORT.
“I think September 12 looks unlikely and I think it has done for a while now, but all those guys – as you do when you fight Canelo, as you do when you fight Anthony Joshua – you wait for the golden ticket.
“It’s the shot of a lifetime against a true great and Callum Smith is right in the mix, as is John Ryder, as is Demetrious Andrade, as is Dmitry Bivol and a lot of our US guys as well.
“I get the feeling that Canelo would like to fight Callum Smith and it would be an honour for him to share the ring with him.”
