Gervonta Davis vs Leo Santa Cruz done deal, Charlos set for big fights in September

Gervonta Davis is going to drop back down to super-featherweight to challenge Leo Santa Cruz for his old WBA title on October 24.

The 25-year-old American knockout artist (23-0, 22 KOs) previously held titles at 130lbs before struggling to make weight and moving up to 135lbs as a result.

Gervonta is unbeaten

However he’s now opting to move back down in weight for a big fight against four-division champion Santa Cruz.

The Mexican star had previously held belts at bantamweight, super-bantamweight and featherweight, then moved up to super-feather last year.

Although he may be outsized by Davis, many still expect him to provide the toughest test of the Mayweather Promotions fighter’s career so far.

Leo Santa Cruz is 37-1-1

This fight is one of an impressive behind-closed-doors schedule being put together by Al Haymon’s PBC in the US for the remainder of the year.

It’s also been announced that Jermall Charlo vs Sergiy Derevyanchenko is now a done deal for September 26.

Charlo is a two-weight world champion with a record of 30-0 (22 KOs).

At super-welterweight, he proved himself as one of the division’s best by knocking out Julian Williams, but fans have been sceptical of his middleweight reign facing limited opposition.

In steps Derevyanchenko.

The 34-year-old’s unremarkable record of 13-2 (10 KOs) far from tells the full story of his career.

In his two title shots he recovered from early knockdowns, first losing on a split decision to Daniel Jacobs and then a close unanimous decision to Gennady Golovkin.

Many felt, especially in the GGG fight, that Derevyanchenko had been hard done by.

Regardless of whether he holds a belt or not, he’s proved himself as a legitimate world class middleweight and will be a tough test for Charlo.

As well as this, Jermall’s twin brother Jermell Charlo will have a three-belt unification against Jeison Rosario on the same show.

Jermell holds the WBC super-welterweight title, with Rosario owning the WBA and IBF belts.

A bout between them is mouth-watering prospect.
