Liverpool plot transfer raid on Bournemouth to solve two issues in Jurgen Klopp’s squad

Liverpool have returned their attention to a player they missed out on signing last summer.

The Anfield club were keen on the England Under-21 defender last summer, but lost out to the Cherries, who signed him for £13million from Bristol City.

But now that Bournemouth have been relegated from the Premier League, clubs have begun to circle round the Dorset side’s most promising talents.

Liverpool are now considering a fresh bid for Kelly, 21, who can play at centre-back or left-back.

Both are positions that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp wants to strengthen, particularly with Dejan Lovren moving to Zenit St Petersburg this week.

But there are worries about Kelly’s lack of game time at the Vitality Stadium, where ankle, thigh and hamstring injuries have hampered his career since his move.

Kelly made only nine appearances for the Cherries in the season just ended, and didn’t actually make his league debut until after the re-start in June.

When asked which was Kelly’s best position, Eddie Howe said: “I think both positions for us at the moment. I wouldn’t say one or the other – he can play both very well.

“We have seen that, albeit in his very short time with us, when he’s trained.

“From full-back he’s really good athletically, he uses the ball well and is strong and good in the air – has lots of good qualities.

“At centre-back the same qualities show and his use of the ball is very good.”

Bournemouth were relegated from the Premier League despite a final-day win at Everton.

Aston Villa’s 1-1 draw at West Ham was enough to condemn the Cherries back to the Championship after five years in the top flight.
