Man Utd suffer Jadon Sancho alternative blow as Leicester plot £30m David Brooks transfer

Leicester are preparing to challenge Manchester United with a £30million move for Bournemouth winger David Brooks. The relegated Cherries are bracing themselves for more raids on their squad in the next few weeks, after Nathan Ake left for Manchester City in a £40m deal, and with goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale set to complete an £18.5m switch back to Sheffield United.

Wales forward Brooks, 23, is also being chased by United as a back-up in case their move for Jadon Sancho falls through – but Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers is understood to be in pole position.

Bournemouth need to sell players to finance their bid to bounce straight back to the Premier League under new manager Jason Tindall – but the south coast club are determined not to see any of their stars go on the cheap.

Tindall, who replaced the departed Eddie Howe earlier this month, said: “We have a value for our players and if that value is met then players have got the opportunity to make the decision they feel is right for them.

“But it needs to be right for the club. It’s not a club that will stand in anybody’s way.”

Tottenham and Newcastle are both interested in striker Callum Wilson but will have to pay around £30m, and Bournemouth want a similar amount for forward Josh King, who is being chased by West Ham, Everton and Leeds, as well as several continental clubs.

Rodgers wants to freshen up Leicester’s attack, after a late slump saw his team miss out on Champions League football for this coming season.

Brooks missed a large part of last season with an ankle ligament injury which needed surgery, and he only returned to action towards the end of the campaign, but was unable to prevent Howe’s side dropping into the Championship.

He joined the Cherries from Sheffield United in 2018 in an £11.5m deal, and scored seven goals in his first season at the Vitality Stadium.

United’s interest in Brooks comes amid frustrations in trying to seal a switch for former Manchester City youngster Sancho.

Borussia Dortmund are holding out for more than £100m for the 20-year-old winger – a fee United believe is inflated in the post-coronavirus pandemic transfer market.

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward warned the COVID-19 crisis will impact the spending power of clubs across the board.

And Dortmund’s reluctance to revise their price tag might force United to ramp up their interest in getting Brooks through the door.
