Tony Bellew Exclusive: Whyte WILL become heavyweight champion, despite Povetkin KO

Tony Bellew has told talkSPORT that he still believes Dillian Whyte will become heavyweight champion of the world.

The ‘Body Snatcher’ lost his mandatory position as he was knocked out by Alexander Povetkin on Saturday night at Fight Camp.

He consoled Whyte after the fight

Bellew was in attendance working for Sky and recalled his experience from ringside after Whyte floored Povetkin twice in the fourth round.

“I’d shouted out to Dillian, ‘Just be patient now,’” Bellew told the talkSPORT Breakfast on Monday.

“Because the worst thing you can do with a fighter like Povetkin, Povetkin reminds you very much of Nigel Benn.

“Whenever you hurt the beast, the most dangerous thing to do is approach him and be so head-on and gung-ho.

Povetkin knocked Whyte cold

“Dillian approached it right, but the one thing he did is he took his eyes off him. As he bends down, his eyes are looking at the floor.

“If Dillian keeps his eyes on Alexander Povetkin, he sees the shot. He still probably gets knocked down, but he doesn’t get rendered unconscious.

“It’s always the punch that you don’t see that puts you to sleep and Dillian knew nothing about the shot.

“I’ve been there so I know what it’s like.”

Bellew still thinks Whyte will win a world title

Promoter Eddie Hearn has already confirmed that they intend to activate the rematch clause and make the fight again.

Bellew reacted: “I think there’s adjustments that need to be made on his part and I’ll speak to him.

“He definitely needs to make changes and there’s just a few other little things he needs to learn.

“But I definitely believe Dillian Whyte will still get to the final destination and become a heavyweight champion of the world.

“Just the right opponents at the right time. We’ve gotta remember, 1,000 days he’s been waiting to challenge for the WBC world title.

“And for 800 of them days Deontay Wilder’s been the world champion – a man who didn’t want to face Dillian Whyte, didn’t wanna know.

“He was facing taxi drivers instead of facing Dillian Whyte.

Fury is the WBC world champion now

“It’s wrong what’s been done to the lad, but he’s now in this very strange position where he’s gotta go into the rematch and his career is on the line.

“I believe Dillian will beat Povetkin. I think he needs to go in there and perform basically the same.

“Just, when you go in for the final finish, you’ve got to be alert and aware.”
