Usyk’s team insist he will press for mandatory shot before AJ vs Fury

Oleksandr Usyk’s team have made their position clear with regards to the pursuit of Anthony Joshua.

The former undisputed cruiserweight champion was made WBO mandatory for a heavyweight title shot in June of last year after he cleared out his weight class and moved up as the unbeaten king.

Usyk won every belt at cruiserweight and is now chasing titles in the heavyweight division

The champion at the time was Andy Ruiz Jr, who was granted permission to fulfil his rematch obligation to Anthony Joshua.

AJ won back the belts and was faced with the issue of two simultaneous mandatories.

IBF challenger Kubrat Pulev has been waiting for his title shot since defeating Hughie Fury in an October 2018 final eliminator.

As a result, he took priority and will be Joshua’s next fight.

After Pulev, Usyk will be due for his title shot.

However, AJ has agreed financial terms for an undisputed fight against Tyson Fury, providing they both win their upcoming bouts.

“Usyk has been the WBO mandatory challenger for more than one year,” Usyk’s K2 co-promoter Alexander Krassyuk, who represents him alongside Eddie Hearn, told Sky.

“He has agreed to let AJ versus Pulev happen, with regards that the winner fights him next. This statement is still solid.

Usyk is due to face Dereck Chisora next – target date October 31

“Our plan is – A) Beat Derek Chisora.

“B) Push AJ to comply with WBO rules or vacate the title.

“C) Defeat AJ (or any other WBO champion or contender) and become the heavyweight champion. Simple and practical.”

It is unclear at this stage which way the WBO would rule on this issue, but it is very possible Usyk could force AJ to vacate one belt, technically removing the ‘undisputed’ status from a potential Fury fight.
