Varane: This defeat is mine, I have to accept it

Raphael Varane is usually one of Real Madrid’s most reliable players, but the centre-back was at fault for both of Manchester City’s goals in a 2-1 win for Pep Guardiola’s side at the Etihad Stadium.

This result, coupled with the 2-1 victory City achieved in Madrid, means that Los Blancos have crashed out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage.

“This defeat is mine, I have to accept it,” Varane said in his post-match interview.

“I have responsibility for this defeat.

“We had prepared well, but mistakes were costly.

“I am sad for my team-mates.”

The Frenchman noted that Real Madrid’s risks at the start of the game did not pay off.

“I felt good about the game, maybe we took too many risks at the beginning and paid too much for it,” Varane explained.

“I’m grateful for the support of my team-mates, it hasn’t happened to me much in my career [where I’ve made costly mistakes].

“There are areas on the pitch where you pay very dearly, that’s the way it is. There’s no further explanation.”
